Hammersley Gorge Series
Hammersley Gorge Series
The spectacular coloured banded iron formations, the waves and bends created by the strong forces of nature over millions of years, found at Hamersley Gorge - one of the oldest parts of this continent - was the inspiration for this series of work. The heating, cooling and erosion over millions of years has sculptured nature's masterpiece. Purple, crimson, indigo, deep red, orange, green and yellow layers of the gorge walls have twisted, collided, contorted, and flow like ribbons bending and twisting in the breeze, whilst reflecting the forces that uplifted and bent the landscape into its current state. Ever changing light provides forever changing and astonishing colours that highlight the texture, lines and flow of the rock face.
This series focuses on capturing the feel of the marks created by nature - the colour, lines and texture of Hamersley Gorge. The final form of each piece tries to capture the spontaneity of nature through the somewhat unpredictable outcomes of the felting process and the serendipitous effect of painting, drying then washing the piece. All these components reflect a spontaneous coming together of the design and technical elements as a way of avoiding the imposition of a rigid framework and straight edges onto the design elements.
