Art Gallery
Welcome to the gallery of my work. As a contemporary artist I work across several media. Most of my work is textile based but I also enjoy working with mixed media and monoprinting. My artist statement provides an overview of where I am at now.
I invite you to see my work below and please click on the image to see it in full and read the story behind it.
Nature's Palette Symphony
Our natural environment provides us with a feast of living colour. Yet hidden in the leaves, flowers, stems, barks of each individual plant are its unique pigment formula. Regional plants provide their own regional palette of colour. My art pieces in this series go back to this basic essence of living colour by creating cloth and art with colours, marks and eco prints of local flora and using pigments extracted from flora of the region.
There are five movements within this symphony. They are Eco Colour, Improvisation, Monoprints with Nature's Palette, Mixed Media using Nature's Palette and Playing with Flora. If you click on Nature's Symphony below you will be able to see the pieces within each series.
Hammersley Gorge Series
The spectacular coloured banded iron formations, the waves and bends created by the strong forces of nature over millions of years, found at Hamersley Gorge - one of the oldest parts of this continent - was the inspiration for this series of work. The heating, cooling and erosion over millions of years has sculptured nature's masterpiece. Purple, crimson, indigo, deep red, orange, green and yellow layers of the gorge walls have twisted, collided, contorted, and flow like ribbons bending and twisting in the breeze, whilst reflecting the forces that uplifted and bent the landscape into its current state. Ever changing light provides forever changing and astonishing colours that highlight the texture, lines and flow of the rock face.
This series focuses on capturing the feel of the marks created by nature - the colour, lines and texture of Hamersley Gorge. The final form of each piece tries to capture the spontaneity of nature through the somewhat unpredictable outcomes of the felting process and the serendipitous effect of painting, drying then washing the piece. All these components reflect a spontaneous coming together of the design and technical elements as a way of avoiding the imposition of a rigid framework onto the design elements
Views from a Balloon
As you float above the countryside in a hot air ballon in a weirdly silent environment except for the occasional whoosh of the burst of gas a different perspective of the landscape is exposed for your eyes, your senses. Incredible vistas unfold as you glide over the landscape. There are two series within this category: Views from Above and Ploughed Fields. The series of the ploughed fields over time from the drought to when it broke came about because of the lasting impression on me of seeing this phenomena unfold from above.
Winter
The pieces draw on my experience of living in the Australian Snowy Mountains. The initial piece was a response to a photo leading on to creating a response to a postcard depicting winter in Australian Snowy Mountains. The remaining pieces whilst being a response to a photo are also influenced by my response to Gormley's sculptures at Lake Ballard in Western Australia.
